REGIONAL WORKSHOPS 2006-2007

Theological Reflection and Social Analysis
for a Prophetic Way of Life
(Contemporary Social Spirituality)

Regional Workshops for corporate learning, framed in consultation with staff of CMSM and LCWR, led by presenters with acknowledged expertise and experience, designed to offer essential skills for religious life and ministry for the 21st century.

Day I – 1:00 - 5:00 pm – For Leaders and Ministers of Formation – How to engage your Congregation in theological reflection and social analysis.

Day 2 – 9 am – 4 pm – For All Members of Congregations, Associates and others who may be interested – A Workshop for Skill Building

Maria Cimperman OSU
Assistant Professor of Moral Theology at Oblate School of Theology, Maria earned a Master of Divinity at the University of Notre Dame, a Licentiate in Sacred Theology at Weston Jesuit School of Theology and a Doctorate in Theology (Theological Ethics) at Boston College. In her most recent publication, When God’s People Have HIV/AIDS: An Approach to Ethics (Orbis, September 2005), Maria addresses the integration of morality, spirituality and social ethics in light of contemporary issues. She also writes and lectures on areas related to religious life and the post-Vatican II generation. During Summer 2006, one of her courses, titled, Global Ethics: Focus on Zambia, will culminate in a month long experience in Zambia in June.

Jim Hug SJ  
President of the Center of Concern in Washington, D.C. M.A. in Philosophy from Springhill College, an MA in Christian Spirituality from St. Louis University and a Ph.D. in Christian Ethics from the University of Chicago. He worked at the Jesuit School of Theology in Chicago and the Woodstock Theological Center. His focus is on research and education on issues of faith and economic justice and he has lectured, directed workshops and carried on policy advocacy throughout the U.S. and in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Working with Ed DeBerri, he just finished revising and editing the Center’s best-selling Catholic Social Teaching: Our Best Kept Secret. He coordinated the Center’s leadership in convening an international conference on Social Responsibility in the Age of Globalization, co-convened by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. From 1993-1996 and again in 2001 through 2003, Jim took a leading role in the Center’s work on social development at a series of UN conferences. The Center strove to focus attention on structural issues of economic justice and to develop and strengthen international networks capable of effective work for a more just process of development at home and abroad. He has served or is serving as faculty or board member of the Leadership Institute for the Directors of Catholic Charities sponsored by Catholic Charities USA, the Religious Task Force on Central America and Mexico, the United States Catholic Mission Association, and the Center for Mission Research and Study at Maryknoll. He is currently a member of the advisory board of the Maryknoll Mission Association of the Faithful, and the International Jesuit Network for Development and CIDSE [Cooperation Internationale pour le Développement et la Solidarité]

Joe Nangle OFM
A Franciscan priest, Joe served in the following ministries: missionary in Bolivia and Peru; Staff - U.S. Catholic Mission Association; Staff - U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Office for International Justice and Peace ; Director of Priests Retreats; Director of Justice and Peace, Conference of Major Superiors of Men; Outreach Director and Staff Writer - Sojourners Magazine; Director Franciscan Mission Service (Lay Mission Program); Presently Associate Pastor for Hispanic Ministry, Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, Arlington, VA; For the past 20 years Joe Nangle has lived at the Assisi Community in inner-city Washington, DC together with lay and religious, married and single and men. He has served on the boards of Pax Christi USA, the U.S. Catholic Mission Association, Religious Task Force on Central America and Mexico, and the Share Foundation. Currently he assists with the ForMission Program of the Religious Formation Conference.

Marie Dennis
Director of the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns, Washington DC, Vice President, Pax Christi International. Pax Christi USA Ambassador of Peace. Masters in Moral Theology from Washington Theological Union Lay woman, a mother of six, a grandmother, and a secular Franciscan. Dennis is also a member of Assisi Community, Washington DC, a Catholic community of religious and lay women and men, families, and single people who are intentional about simple lifestyle and the work for social transformation. Former Board Member of the Washington Office on Latin America, Sojourners magazine, the Religious Task Force on Central America and Mexico, the Latin America Working Group, the International Relations Center, the Maryknoll Center for Mission Research and Washington Office on Africa. Co-Chair of the Religious Working Group on the World Bank and IMF, a U.S. coalition of Catholic and Protestant organizations and institutions. Author and co-author of several books and contributor to Sojourners magazine, numerous Pax Christi publications and other works. Marie has traveled widely, mostly to visit the marginal communities where Maryknoll missioners work in Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia, but also to participate in consultations and conferences for Pax Christi International and Maryknoll. She was an election observer in Mexico and Haiti and has participated in delegations to many other countries, including Colombia, Haiti, Guatemala, El Salvador, Afghanistan and Israel-Palestine

FEES

Fees include lunch or supper. Membership in RFC is by religious institute or government unit (e.g. province, region, monastery, etc.)  When an institute or unit becomes a member, everyone who belongs to the unit enjoys the privileges of membership and pays the member fee.

Registrations with payment must be received by the national office 21 days prior to the workshop.  Cancellations are subject to a 20% cancellation fee.  No refund will be made if registration is cancelled in less than 10 days.  Registration after the 10 day deadline must be done at the door and is considered as a walk-in registration.  Your cancelled check is your confirmation.   Confirmation letters are sent to registrants about 2 weeks prior to the workshop.  For additional information contact the national office.  Accommodation is personally arranged.
