“If the world takes something from us on the one hand, God will give us something on the other.”

An Assembly of Hope

S. Tracy Kemme gathered with more than 130 pastoral leaders at the Discerning Deacons Assembly of Hope from May 1-3 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Discerning Deacons is an organization that engages Catholics in discernment about women and the Church. The weekend centered on contributing to the dialogue called for by the Synod on Synodality’s Final Document: “[T]he question of women’s access to diaconal ministry remains open. This discernment needs to continue” (Paragraph 60). In addition to prayer, conversation, and organizing for a renewed diaconate, the assembly included a People’s Mass outside the local ICE processing center, where participants prayed for all impacted by inhumane immigration enforcement. S. Tracy brought along an icon of our Servant of God Sister Blandina Segale to add to the altar.
