Spring Gathering | Sustaining the Formator: Burnout, Boundaries, and Renewal

The Formator Peer Lab is the newly redesigned Quarterly Formator Meet-Up — created to offer deeper, more focused support for those entrusted with formation ministry.

Beginning this year, the Lab will gather three times annually (Fall, Winter, Spring). Each session features an independent theme, so participation in one gathering does not require attendance at another. If you miss one, you simply join the next — no continuity is lost.

This is not another Zoom meeting added to your calendar. And it is not a collection of predictable self-care tips everyone has already heard.

It is a structured, confidential space for real conversation about the interior and institutional weight of formation work.

Why This Spring Session Matters

Formation ministry is sacred — and emotionally demanding.

Formators accompany complex personal stories, hold confidential burdens, navigate authority tensions, and make decisions that shape lives and communities. Much of this responsibility is carried quietly and often alone.

When the formator is depleted, discernment weakens.
When boundaries blur, clarity suffers.
When isolation grows, ministry narrows.

Sustaining the formator is not optional — it is essential to a healthy formation culture.

What This Session Will Address

  • The hidden emotional weight of formation ministry
  • Compassion vs. over-responsibility
  • Healthy boundaries without losing pastoral heart
  • Preventing subtle burnout and cynicism
  • Where formators can process their own loneliness and fatigue

Format

The 90-minute online gathering includes:

  • A brief framing reflection
  • Confidential small-group case conversation
  • Large-group reflection on emerging patterns in formation today
  • Practical tools and resources for ongoing renewal

Small-group discussions remain confidential. The large-group conversation focuses on shared themes rather than individual cases.

For privacy reasons, a session will not be recorded.

Who Should Attend

  • Directors of formation
  • Formation team members
  • Congregational leaders involved in formation
  • Both new and experienced formators

Attendance at previous sessions is not required. Each gathering stands fully on its own.
