Some acts of kindness are never forgotten.
When the Vijayan family received the keys to their new home in Kerala’s rehabilitation township, they knew there was one group they wanted to celebrate with them. Before settling into this new chapter, they invited the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth to bless their home.
It was a simple invitation, but it carried a lot of meaning.
The family survived the devastating landslide that struck Chooralmala in Wayanad. In the days that followed, the Sisters walked alongside them, offering practical support, encouragement, and the reassurance that they did not have to face the aftermath alone.
Months later, the family had not forgotten.
When relatives and friends gathered for the house blessing, the Sisters were welcomed like family. Sister Amrita Manjaly, vice president of the Congregation, joined the celebration as the family stepped into a home they could finally call their own.
As they sat together, the conversation naturally turned to everything they had been through. The family shared memories of the landslide, the uncertainty that followed, and the long journey of rebuilding their lives. They also spoke with gratitude about the people who gave them strength and hope along the way.
For the Sisters, the visit was a reminder that ministry is often about showing up and staying present. Emergency assistance meets immediate needs, but healing takes much longer. It grows through conversations, shared meals, prayer, and simply knowing someone still cares after the crisis has passed.
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus met people in their moments of need and stayed with them through their healing. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth continue that same ministry today by walking alongside individuals and families with compassion, respect, and hope.
The Vijayan family’s invitation is a reminder that even small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. We may never know how far a caring presence reaches, but sometimes, months or even years later, its fruits become clear.
