A new trailer has been released for Current: A Descendant’s Journey for Truth, the documentary that includes the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth’s efforts to preserve and share the history of enslaved people and African Americans connected to Nazareth.
Filmmaker, historian and genealogist Pam Smith recently shared the updated trailer as work continues on the documentary. The film places African Americans at the center of westward migration while examining history through the lens of family stories, historical records and truth telling.
Last year, Smith visited Nazareth to film interviews with Sister Theresa Knabel, who shared the Congregation’s ongoing work to research, acknowledge and present its history with honesty. During her visit, Smith toured Heritage Hall’s African American exhibit, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Archival Center and the Monument to the Enslaved in Nazareth Cemetery.
Smith’s connection to Nazareth is personal. Her ancestor, Mary McCrosky, attended school at Nazareth from 1856 to 1865, and Smith has spent decades researching her family’s history and the broader story of African Americans in Kentucky.
The newly released trailer offers a preview of the documentary, although Smith noted that not every interview appears in the trailer. She said the completed film will present a fuller account of the stories and people involved.
Work continues on the documentary, with Smith to complete a rough cut that she hopes to screen later this summer.
