Sustainabyte: The Economics of Hope — Clean Energy for Our Common Home
In 2014, India made what many considered an audacious promise: to install 100 gigawatts of solar power by 2022, despite having only three gigawatts at the time. The country was the world’s third-largest energy consumer and second-largest coal consumer, yet it chose to bet on solar.
That bet paid off. By February 2025, India reached its solar goal, investing $90 billion in the country and creating more than 300,000 jobs. Solar power has helped stabilize electricity supplies, reduce blackouts, and elevate India as a global climate leader. The country is now targeting five hundred gigawatts of clean power by 2030, which is enough to provide half of the country’s electricity needs.
India’s success shows that the energy transition is about more than technology. This transition reflects a core message of Laudato Si’: Caring for our common home and caring for people are inseparable. Renewable energy is not only an environmental response, but also an economic and moral opportunity to create dignity through work, protect creation, and build a more just and sustainable future for all. When we invest in environmental sustainability, we affirm that protecting the Earth and caring for communities are inseparable acts of stewardship.
