Sustainabyte: The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to welcome millions of fans to the United States, Canada, and Mexico, making it the largest World Cup ever held. While an event of this scale brings environmental challenges, it is also becoming a testing ground for sustainability solutions. Transportation is expected to account for nearly 87% of the tournament’s carbon emissions, making travel the event’s largest environmental impact. Stadiums and fan zones can also generate large amounts of waste, with a single match requiring more than 100,000 food and beverage items. To address these challenges, host cities are investing in long-term sustainability improvements. Houston is expanding public transit connections and walkable routes to reduce vehicle use. Seattle is pursuing zero-waste goals at major venues. FIFA has required host stadiums to meet environmental certification standards focused on energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction. In Monterrey, Mexico, a reusable cup program has reduced beverage-related plastic waste by as much as 90%. Food recovery and composting programs are also being expanded to divert waste from landfills and redirect surplus food to local communities. While no sporting event is without an environmental footprint, the 2026 World Cup demonstrates how global events can inspire innovation and encourage investments that benefit both people and the planet long after the world champions have been crowned.
