Sustainabyte: On Aug.26, a massive collapse of rock and glacial ice high in the Himalayas sent water, mud and debris rushing through river valleys in Nepal. Scientists are still investigating exactly what triggered the collapse, but the disaster highlights how natural climate patterns and a warming planet can create overlapping risks. One factor influencing weather around the world right now is El Niño, a natural climate pattern caused by unusually warm waters in the tropical Pacific. El Niño does not cause climate change, but it is occurring on a planet already warmed by human activities. Rising temperatures are melting Himalayan glaciers and can contribute to conditions that destabilize high mountain slopes. Although El Niño begins in the Pacific Ocean, it changes atmospheric patterns that can affect rainfall and temperatures around the world. In Nepal and India, it can make monsoon rainfall less predictable, contributing to longer dry periods that may be interrupted by episodes of intense rainfall and flooding. Kenya may experience heavier seasonal rainfall and increased flooding risk, while Botswana faces greater risk of heat, drought and reduced rainfall. Belize and Central America can experience drier conditions that stress crops and water supplies. Even Kentucky can feel its influence as El Niño alters U.S. winter weather patterns. Nepal reminds us that climate change does not act alone. Natural climate cycles, rising global temperatures and local conditions interact in complicated ways. From the Himalayas to Kentucky, we are connected by one atmosphere, one climate system and one common home.
