A Veterans’ Day prayer-activity for yourself, your children and grandchildren, students in your schools, staff and visitors in health care facilities, fellow veterans and more.

Every veteran has a story. Some stories have never been told. The pain and bad memories are too real. Yet it is important that veterans tell their stories as one way to heal. It’s also important for those who have never been in the military or experienced war to have some knowledge of the hardships. Here are some questions to start a conversation with a veteran followed by a prayer to conclude your conversation.

In what branch of the military did you serve? Why did you choose this branch?

Prayer: O God, bless those who have served in ______________ (name branch) Give them hope and peace as they continue to live in service to their country in active and hidden ways. If they have been wounded in any way, heal their bodies, minds and spirits. Give them peace and let them know that our country honors their bravery and sense of duty.

In which states and countries did you serve? Was it difficult to be away from family and homeland?

Prayer: Dear God, bless everyone in the military who is far from home. Heal their loneliness, their sorrow over missing family events, not being around for the “firsts” important enough to be and recorded. Bless the citizens of the countries and states that were “home” to them during their time of service.

What was hardest about being in the military? How did you cope? Do you feel that the hard things made you stronger?

Prayer: God, our Father, your Son Jesus suffered so much, giving His life for the salvation of the world. Extend your healing to all who continue to suffer the effects of war and military service. And help all countries live in peace.

Amen!
