During the Summer of 2026, the Sisters of bon Secours took a significant step in their Care of Creation journey — announcing a conservation easement with the Howard County Conservancy that permanently protects 32 acres of forest on the Marriottsville campus.
The ceremony brought together County Executive Calvin Ball, who led remarks alongside representatives from the Howard County Conservancy. The decision is a natural expression of the Sisters’ charism and Mission Focus, and a tangible fulfillment of the Laudato Si’ commitment we made in 2021 — to hear the cry of the earth and take practical steps to protect it.
County Executive Ball noted that “protecting our environment starts with long-term vision and strong policy,” adding that forests are essential because they improve air and water quality, preserve wildlife habitat, reduce climate pollution, and help build a more resilient Howard County.
Meg Boyd, Executive Director of the Howard County Conservancy, called the environmental value of the conservation area significant, noting that fragmentation of forests has a huge impact on biodiversity, and that this easement adds another block of permanent preservation for generations to come.

The forest has sheltered wildlife, filtered water, and offered quiet renewal to all who walk its paths for over 60 years. Now it is protected forever.
