Sisters, Associates, family, and friends gathered at Nazareth on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026, to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Higinia Bol, SCN, marking 25 years since she first professed her vows in the same chapel.
The liturgy wove together her story, her Mayan roots, and her ministry in Belize. In the welcome, the community remembered how Sister Higinia’s parents brought a handmade Mayan altar cloth to her first profession, a sign that her people and culture have always walked with her in religious life.
Father Sam Wilson, SJ, who has ministered with her in the villages of the Toledo District in Belize, shared how Sister Higinia quietly changes the way others see God at work. He recalled an early visit to the villages, when he remarked that God was doing something great there. Sister Higinia gently replied, “Yes, Father, I think she is.” That small shift, he said, helped him see “the face of Christ in those women” in a new way, not just with his head, but with his heart.
Father Sam likened her journey to Peter’s, receiving a deeper name and identity in Christ. As “Sister Higinia,” he said, she has helped countless Maya women recognize that they, too, are leaders and catechists, “people of consequence in this church.”
During the Mass, Sister Higinia joined her SCN Community in renewing vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. At the end, she simply thanked the community, naming those who helped make the day special and adding that she will “continue to rely on your support in the coming years.”
