Sister Mary Ellen (Davidette) Meckley, BVM, 90, of Mount Carmel Bluffs, Dubuque, Iowa, died on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
Visitation and Rite of Committal for natural burial was held Thursday, March 26, in the Mary Frances Clarke Chapel. Burial was in the Mount Carmel Cemetery. Sharing of Memories and Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, March 31, with Sharing of Memories beginning at at 9:30 a.m. followed immediately by a memorial Mass at 10:30 a.m.
Sister Mary Ellen ministered in Chicago as an elementary teacher at Presentation, a family liaison for Upward Bound at Mundelein College, and as a social worker at Mount Sinai Hospital, as well as Illinois State Psychiatric Institute and Oak Park Hospital in Oak Park, Ill., and DK Healthcare Services, Inc. in Evergreen Park, Ill. She also taught elementary school at St. Bernard in Los Angeles; St. Charles Borromeo in North Hollywood, Calif.; St. Therese and St. Aloysius in Kansas City, Mo.; and All Saints in Tucson, Ariz.
Sister Mary Ellen was born Feb. 19, 1936, in Waterloo, N.Y., to David Arthur and Margaret (Guido) Meckley. She entered the BVM congregation Sept. 8, 1953, from St. Francis Xavier Parish in Phoenix. She professed first vows on March 19, 1956, and final vows on July 16, 1961.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by a sister Mary Joyce Meckley and a nephew Collin Warner of Phoenix; an aunt Rosemary DeMetro of Waterloo, N.Y., and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 72 years.
