She then taught deaf and hard of hearing children at Public School 11 in the Bronx for twenty-three years. When she retired in 2008 the New York City Board of Education awarded her a special certificate in recognition of her many years of dedicated service. Her colleagues at P.S.11 remained in contact with her in the years after her retirement. While a member of the Holy Union communities at St. Francis DeSales Convent in New York City and Immaculate Conception Convent in Astoria, Sr. Eileen was an active volunteer in the parish. She visited homebound parishioners and those in nursing homes and served as a Eucharistic Minister. In 2017 she moved to Fall River and joined the Holy Union Sisters at the former Landmark Residence. Ill health necessitated a move to the Jewish Home in 2022 where she resided until her death.Donations in Sister Eileen’s memory may be made to the:Mission Advancement Office of the Holy Union Sisters,205 Bedford St.  Fall River MA 02720.

Eileen was a gifted teacher of young children, and she applied these gifts to teaching children who were deaf and hard of hearing. Her ability to use sign language to communicate with her students was a valuable skill. Eileen also inspired the parents of her students and her colleagues at P.S. 11.Jesus’ invitation in Matthew’s Gospel to bring the little children to himself was reflected in Eileen’s ministry. We are confident that the Kingdom of Heaven now belongs to the many young students whose lives she touched. You can download Sister Eileen’s Biography here.Biography Sr. Eileen Lavin 2
