During the SCN Vice President’s visit to Nepal in June 2026, Sister Amrita Manjaly had the opportunity to experience the country’s rich culture and meet women whose lives have changed through the ministries of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. It was her first visit to Nepal, home to the Himalayas, Mount Everest, and the birthplace of Gautama Buddha.

Reflecting on her visit, Sister Amrita said the women she met left a lasting impression on her. In a short time, they taught her the value of modesty, harmony, humility, kindness, generosity, courtesy, tradition, and sincerity.

Sister Aisha Kavalakattu (bottom left) invited Sister Amrita to a nearby village in Dharan, where she ministers with women’s self-help groups. Within a short time, about 10 women gathered under the shade of a tree. Their smiles, laughter, and confidence reflected the progress they had made through their involvement with the Navjyoti Center. Sister Aisha has helped establish 69 women’s self-help groups throughout the Dharan area.

The women eagerly shared their stories. Many described the hardships they faced before becoming involved with the center. Some did not own a home, had no reliable source of income, and struggled to provide food or education for their children.

Today, many have built small businesses selling stationery, meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, and other goods. Others raise chickens or livestock to support their families. Many now own their homes and contribute significantly to their household income. Several spoke with pride about sending their children to college or professional training programs.

One woman invited the Sisters to visit her shop, where she explained how she balances work and family life. She opens her business at 6 a.m. before returning home to prepare her children for school, then continues serving customers throughout the day.

The women also spoke about finding the confidence to advocate for themselves and others. Several shared that alcoholism had once caused conflict and hardship within their families. Today, they described their homes as places of greater peace, stability, and mutual support.

Sister Rosita Kavilpurayidathil (center with Sister Amrita) has served women in Surkhet for the past 25 years. During Sister Amrita’s visit, many of those women also shared stories of how they have built more secure futures for themselves and their families.

Throughout Nepal, the women expressed deep gratitude for the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and the ministries of the Navjyoti Center. Their stories were not only a reflection of resilience and determination but also a reminder that when women are given opportunities, entire families and communities benefit.
