Sister Helan Sathiya shares that in Kenya, students enjoyed an educational trip to Malindi on June 4, accompanied by their teachers. They visited Malindi International Airport and the Meteorological Department located at the airport. For many students, it was their first time seeing an airplane up close. They learned new vocabulary such as air traffic control tower, jet, aeronautical engineer, takeoff, landing and screening. The children were especially excited to watch a flight take off.
During the visit, students met pilots and aeronautical engineers and learned about aircraft maintenance, fueling procedures and the systems used to prevent collisions in the air. They also visited the airport fire station, where they learned about rescue equipment and saw a fire engine used for emergency response.
At the Meteorological Department, students learned how rainfall, temperature and other weather conditions are measured and recorded. They observed weather instruments and gained a better understanding of how weather information supports aviation and daily life. The airport visit lasted nearly three hours and provided many opportunities for learning beyond the classroom.
The excitement continued with a visit to a wildlife center, where students saw crocodiles, snakes, tortoises and a variety of birds. Some bravely touched snakes and birds, making the experience even more memorable. A 132-year-old tortoise was a major attraction and captured everyone’s attention.
Students practiced teamwork, helped one another, and showed care and concern for their classmates throughout the day. Gratitude, cooperation and friendship were among the many lessons learned. Both students and teachers returned home with new knowledge, wonderful memories and a deeper appreciation for learning through experience.
